About the challenge

Welcome to the Ideathon subset of our climate challenge! This track is purely focused on high-level ideation, grounded in scientific truth and personal history. To ensure only the most viable, impactful concepts rise to the top, all submissions will undergo a rigorous, multi-stage peer review round before hitting the final judging panel.

Dive into the realm of ideas, tap into something inward, and make sure you smile—let's pitch for the environment!

Get started

Teams must conceptualize a solution—whether an app, physical prototype blueprint, community initiative, or policy framework—that leverages or mimics how plants solve environmental issues.

Every single pitch must seamlessly address two foundational pillars:

1. The Science: What specific plant mechanism or botanical research inspired this? (e.g., phytoremediation in sunflowers, stomata water-retention in succulents).

2. The Lived Experience: How does this connect to a climate issue you or your community have personally witnessed? (e.g., urban heat islands in your neighborhood, local flooding, declining crop yields on a family farm).

What to Build

🌿 Hackathon Tracks

You can choose one of our three core tracks or carve your own path:

  1. The Concrete Jungle (Urban Resilience): Integrating plant biology into infrastructure to combat urban heat and dropping air quality.

  2. Biomimicry & Tech (Nature-Inspired Engineering): Designing technology that mimics plant behavior to conserve energy or reduce waste.

  3. Deep Roots (Agriculture & Soil Repair): Securing food systems and repairing degraded landscapes using native flora and fungal networks.

  4. Wildcard: Innovate your own unique concept outside these boundaries, as long as it adheres to the core plant-science guidelines.

What to Submit

To qualify for the rigorous peer-review phase, your team must submit exactly two components. Incomplete submissions will be disqualified.

1. The Research & Insight Paper
  • Length: Maximum 900 words (all-inclusive).

  • Content: Must outline your core idea, the specific botanical mechanism utilized, and the localized environmental problem you are targeting.

  • Data: Must include relevant statistics, environmental data, or structured personal analysis supporting your claims.

2. The Pitch Video
  • Length: Maximum 1.5 minutes (90 seconds).

  • Format: Video link (YouTube, Vimeo, or Google Drive link with public viewing permissions).

  • Content: A high-energy summary of your concept. Introduce your team, explain your inspiration, and explain why your plant-based solution matters. Make sure you smile and pitch with passion!
